Winter 2023 Housing Solutions Student Essay Contest: Deadline Extended


We have extended the deadline to April 28, 2023 to account for end-of-year deadlines!


Housing Solutions for Health Equity invites undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Michigan to submit an essay on a housing-related topic by April 28, 2023 for a chance to win $300 and an opportunity to be featured on our website. The essay must be housing-related, but there are a wide range of topics that may qualify. To qualify, the essay must perform one of the following:

  • discuss how a housing policy, program, intervention, or market force shapes or has shaped opportunities for affordable housing, healthy housing, safe neighborhoods, and/or equitable and vibrant cities

  • propose an innovative policy, program, or intervention to address the affordable housing crisis, promote healthy housing, safe neighborhoods, and/or equitable and vibrant cities


Essays will be evaluated by our leadership team based on the student’s demonstrated understanding of the literature and housing ecosystem, depth of analysis or innovation on policies and programs, and written communication ability.


Additional details:

  • Graduate and undergraduate student essays will be evaluated separately. A first-place prize of $300 will be awarded in each category.

  • All essays will be independently evaluated for an opportunity to be featured on the Housing Solutions for Health Equity website.

  • Essays must be between 1000 and 2000 words in length.

  • We will not accept any essays previously published, in press, or publicly submitted elsewhere.


Submit by attaching your essay in .PDF format in an email to housingforhealth@umich.edu. Please name your essay “[LastName]_Winter2023HousingSolutions”, include “Winter 2023 Housing Solutions Student Essay Contest” in the subject line, and indicate whether you are a graduate or undergraduate student in the email.
